What to wear with your Body Chains

In my years running Dolorous there’s one statement I’ve heard more than any other: “I love the look of body chains, but have no idea what I’d wear them with!” to which I typically respond “Just about anything!”

I design my body chains to be versatile, easy to wear and flattering on a wide variety of body types. They're adjustable, comfortable, and ready to be added to any of your favourite outfits! Sure, you can pair your body chains with evening gowns (I’ve been known to use mine to spice up the same Little Black Dress that I wear to every formal occasion), but, to be honest, my preferred pairing is to wear my body chains with jeans and a T-shirt! Layered over flowy sundresses comes in as a close second.

To illustrate my point, here are a few of my current favourites from the Dolorous Body Chain selection and descriptions of the outfits I'd wear them with!

Luna Draped Choker Body Chain

This relaxed fit silhouette is perfect for wearing over a simple white T-Shirt and your favourite jeans. Since the focal point of this piece is higher up on the body it reads a lot like a necklace at first glance, making it easy for daytime wear. If you want to step it up for the evening just throw on a heel, maybe a red lip, and you're good to go!

Kayla Harness Body Chain

When I want to add a little structure to my favourite flowy summer dress I love a harness style Body Chain like Kayla here! It creates an accent at your waistline without the harsh line of a belt and instantly makes even the most feminine florals a little bit edgy.

Silver Infinity Body Chain

If subtlety is more in tune with your style, this sweet nothing of a body chain will be your new best friend. This sweet accessory is solid sterling silver which means you can just as easily wear it to dinner or for a dive in the ocean! The shape is ultra flattering and it looks lovely with tank tops, t-shirts, dresses or even to accent your favourite swimsuit! It may look simple but this versatile body chain is anything but!

I’d love to hear your thoughts on the best ways to wear body chains! Leave a comment below or reach out and let me know what you think!

DOLOROUS: MODERN, UNDERSTATED JEWELLERY

Danielle Singer was still in school when she started Dolorous Jewellery, her line of everyday pieces. She draws inspiration from everywhere, including her recent honeymoon in Japan, and the concept of wabi-sabi (beauty through imperfection), which heavily influenced the Fall 2017 collection. What makes Dolorous Jewellery a proudly Canadian company? “My pieces are often an understated and accessible kind of elegant,” says Singer. “I think that quality really mirrors the Canadian sensibility—we’re laid-back and easygoing, but we know how to make an impact.” - Canadian Living Magazine June 8, 2017

It's the second instalment of my 'Meet the Model' feature and I'm so excited to introduce you to Mila!

She is a creative force who, though a self-described introvert, expresses herself through modelling, photography, and even film production! She may be a bit on the quiet side, but I got her to open up and here's what she had to say!

Tell us a bit about yourself:

I never know how to start these questions...yikes. Ok, I’m based in Toronto. I’m always thinking about films and how much I want to make them. I shift my focus from acting to modelling, modelling to photography because I like to express my creativity in as many ways possible.

How did you get into modelling?:

I think my friends and I were a little possessed by America’s Next Top Model and just Tyra Bank’s in general. We watched the show religiously and with a webcam and older sister who did makeup we had our own photo shoots. We shot every weekend and I’ll never forget how meticulous we were. That’s pretty much how it all started.

Describe your personal style in 5 words:

Evolving, Introverted, eclectic and loose.

What is your favourite thing about your job?

The opportunity to make someone's idea come to life. Doesn’t matter if it’s a short film or a photo shoot, it’s beautiful that I can take my impression of the idea and blend it with not just the person that it came from but the rest of the team.

What’s your favourite restaurant?

Vital Life in Kensington market. If you're a skeptic when it comes to vegan food I encourage you to try this place, it will change your life!

What’s your favourite movie?

Melancholia by Lars Von Trier. This film always finds it’s way back to me.

What are you most likely to be doing when you’re not modelling?

I actually don’t do much modelling so, for the most part, I’m secretly working on my short films.

What items are always in your purse?

Wallet, of course, lip balm, headphones, a book (currently reading “How to Think More About Sex” by Alain de Botton) and a bunch of old receipts.

If you were an emoji which one would you be?

The flamenco dancer is 100% me.

If we asked 10yr old you what you would be when you grew up what would you have told us?

An actress. But I would make sure that you knew I only wanted to be in romantic films, nothing more.

Describe your ideal Saturday:

All I need is some alone time.

I hope you enjoyed getting to know Mila as much as I did! For more Dolorous highlights, styling tips, and exclusive offers, head to the bottom of this page and sign up for the Newsletter!

The 7 jewelry styles I'm packing for a weekend in New York
Dolorous Jewelry essentials

Spoiler Alert: I'm bringing one of every style! Body Chains, Lariats, Chokers, Statement Earrings and my favourite Stacking Rings!

As a jewelry designer you can imagine the kind of mayhem that breaks loose when it comes down to picking my favourite pieces of the moment to take away with me, or maybe you can't ... things get pretty crazy!

After an afternoon of drowning in chains, these are my 'can't live without' styles I emerged with. When I travel I like to pack pretty light, in fact, for any trip under a week I usually keep it down to a carry-on. As means of keeping my load so light it's important to pack both clothing and jewelry that's able to effortlessly transition from day to night and keep my outfit appropriate wherever my day may take me, and in a city like New York, who knows where I might end up!

Here's a rundown of the what and why of thejewelry I'm bringing. Let's start off with my new favourite statement piece, the Cleo Draped Choker Body Chain. This piece is seriously to die for and an amazing travel companion! In the daytime, I can wear it as a long layered necklace, paired with jeans and a T for an easy but fun statement look, come nighttime, I can simply slip my arms inside and BAM! That simple jeans and T look is transformed into an evening-ready bombshell outfit! Throw on some Red lipstick and this look is a done deal.

Clockwise from that, I have my tried and true everyday staple, the Dea Black Leather Choker. This little beauty goes with practically any outfit and is subtle enough that it can be layered on with most of the other pieces I'm bringing too! Same goes for my two favourite stacking rings, the Petra Silver Stone Ring and the Third Eye Ring. All three of these accessories will probably be glued to me for the whole trip.

Next on the list is this season's hottest accessory, the Cea statement earring! These add instant glamour with no effort and make any outfit ultra modern! As soon as I made them I was instantly in love with these earrings, not to mention when I put them on I feel like dancing!

The last two are my new Sterling Silver stars, the Ri Silver Rings Lariat and the Allie Mixed Metal Bracelet. I can hardly tell you how much I love these two! The Ri Lariat is a new take on the Dolorous all-time best selling style and this new Sterling Silver incarnation is the most grown up and go-with-everything of them all. This versatile beauty can be a choker or a long necklace, it can be worn on its own or layered up with other necklaces, and it's always ready to take your look from day to night! The adjustable fit also makes it super easy to match with literally any neckline, making the Ri Silver Lariat my #1 favourite travel accessory! As for the Allie Bracelet, its modern mixed metal style makes it pair perfectly with any other piece on my list and will make a perfect finishing touch to every outfit in my suitcase.

With this pack of beauties I know all my NY looks will be as ready for fun as I am! To see what I get up to (and maybe a bit of what I'm wearing) be sure to follow @dolorousjewellery on instagram!

Pyrite is so hot right now! This Metallic Crystal is popping up everywhere, and it's been a staple of the Dolorous jewelry collection for years now!

Pyrite has been one of my favourite gemstones for a long time, as is likely evident by the fact that its included in early every collection I've done since I've launched the line! I love the unique, rich metallic tone, how it looks gorgeous in polished or rough form, and its believed to promote positive energy and focus and lets be honest, a little extra positive energy never hurt anyone!

This past year the metallic trend has been going strong with metallic tones popping up everywhere. Etsy even just did a write up on the years upcoming Gem trends and named Pyrite one of this years 8 most popular gems and stating that "pyrite has never felt more right than it does right now". I couldn't agree more!

Here are a few of my favourite pieces that feature Pyrite at its finest
